Sitting Here With You in the Future
Speculative Queer Futures and Environments
- in collaboration with Lucas Larochelle, Mattie Tesfaldet, and QT.bot
2019 - ongoing
Sitting Here With You in the Future is the name of a performance accompanying the art work of the same title by artist / designer Lucas Larochelle. Using text from QT.bot, an artificial intelligence that generates speculative queer futures from the database of Queering The Map, a karaoke-style reel was created. The narratives of LGBTQ2+ life generated by QT.bot straddle the line between absurdity and reality, revelling in the potentials ‘failures’ and ‘incoherencies’ of the queer use of machine learning technologies. The camp nature of the lyrics is mirrored into a sound piece, a pop un/national anthem of non/places tapestried generously with Mariah Carey, seagulls, and harp glissandi. During the performance, the artist's spoken delivery of these lyrics is vocoded in and out of sung-song, dipping into illegibility, ultimately becoming pure pop textural affect akin with QT.bot's failures.
Sitting Here With You in the Future was conceived as part of Studio XX's Slow Tech Residency 2019, and performed at Mutek AI Art Lab 2020, and featured as part of MUTEK Montreal's 2020 Distant Arcades.
